Benelux break October 2009

Part 3

Terneuzen / Walsoorden

The forecast for our third day was not good. If the heavy rain materialised we were considering driving
to Antwerp for closer views of the ships. However the day started grey so we stayed on the riverfront.
The first two vessels passed us in considerable gloom so we decided to get what we could in the canal
then head to Walsoorden where the ships pass closer.

marietjedeborah.jpg (155586 bytes)

Berthed in the canal at Terneuzen the Dutch flagged "Marietje Deborah".

balticexcellent.jpg (121607 bytes)

Berthed down a side arm off the canal at Terneuzen the "Baltic Excellent" was used on the NSF service from the Tees as "Norcliff".

karinag.jpg (174227 bytes)

Also berthed along the canal the Antiguan registered coaster "Karina G.". From here we headed to Walsoorden.

mschina.jpg (146765 bytes)

Having taken some very poor shots at Terneuzen, first vessel passing us at Walsoorden was the
"MSC Hina". Ships are even closer in passing here, with the poor conditions this helped a little.
This is really an afternoon location - this shot was taken just after 10 am.

mschina2.jpg (159324 bytes)

mschina3.jpg (133474 bytes)

mscjilhan.jpg (120980 bytes)

She was followed by the smaller "MSC Jilhan", possibly used as a feeder to the Antwerp hub.

mscjilhan2.jpg (137694 bytes)

mscjilhan3.jpg (134788 bytes)

manzanilloii.jpg (121645 bytes)

The Belgian dredger "Manzanillo II" was the first vessel seen this morning at Terneuzen
but these shots are much better.

manzanilloiic.jpg (143651 bytes)

margaretab.jpg (135860 bytes)

Next inward was the feeder "Margareta B".

saintroch.jpg (167983 bytes)

Inward at 11:30 as the rain continues to stop and start, the "Saint Roch" is one of a quite
distinctive class of ro/ro containership.

saintroch2.jpg (130492 bytes)

repubarge.jpg (138419 bytes)

After waiting for over an hour the next movement was the large Italian flagged ro/ro "Repubblica Argentina".

repubarge2.jpg (142119 bytes)

repubarge3.jpg (139945 bytes)

peikko.jpg (129256 bytes)

As the tide was now flooding quite rapidly more movements started, first inward bound the Peters built
"Peikko".

ooclstpetersburg.jpg (129270 bytes)

Two container feeders outward next, leading was the JR Shipping "OOCL St. Petersburg", another product
of the Sietas shipyard....

ooclstpetersburg2.jpg (131398 bytes)

wmsgroningen.jpg (131871 bytes)

..closely followed by the "WMS Groningen".

roelof.jpg (134162 bytes)

Next inward was another Sietas built vessel, the Dutch flagged "Roelof".

roelof2.jpg (151720 bytes)

novatrans.jpg (137397 bytes)

As the rain started again, next inward was the Dutch coaster "Novatrans".

celina.jpg (130250 bytes)

The next departure was the Peter Dohle mini-bulker "Celina"...

mikhaillomonosov.jpg (114906 bytes)

..followed by the Russian "Mikhail Lomonosov".

rathrowan.jpg (120099 bytes)

Inward at 14:30, the "Rathrowan", registered in Bergen in Gearbulk funnel colours.

rathrowan2.jpg (134949 bytes)

mscengland.jpg (143570 bytes)

Following "Rathrowan" closely, the "MSC England" unusually without the MSC logo on the hull.

mscengland2.jpg (161085 bytes)

tripoli2.jpg (123279 bytes)

Outward for Zeebrugge the inland feeder "Tripoli".

pacificpearl.jpg (132063 bytes)

Next inward was the tanker "Pacific Pearl", taking quite a heel to starboard on the turn.

pacificpearl2.jpg (144901 bytes)

pacificpearl3.jpg (127638 bytes)

pacificpearl4.jpg (137399 bytes)

cremona.jpg (128203 bytes)

Next inward was the "Cremona" - a sister to the "Celina" seen outward a short while ago.

achtergracht.jpg (123844 bytes)

As the light and conditions started to fail rapidly again, next in was Spliethof's "Achtergracht".

transexeter2.jpg (135065 bytes)

SeaTrans "Trans Exeter" was next inward, one of the better styled vessels in this fleet.

kristinschepers.jpg (125202 bytes)

This view of "Kristin Schepers" inward shows the rain falling quite heavily again.

tumelaar.jpg (116981 bytes)

As does this view of the tug "Tumelaar" - inward towing a crane barge.

Two further vessels were seen outward then we decided to return to Terneuzen at 16:15.

pulpca.jpg (105953 bytes)

This turned out to be a good idea - the weather was slightly better by our return and we got better
photos of the last two vessels. First out was the forest products ro/ro "Pulpca".

pulpca2.jpg (111880 bytes)

starstandard.jpg (99352 bytes)

She was followed by the reefer "Star Standard" - built 2009 and almost in the Blue Star colour scheme.

starstandard2.jpg (129106 bytes)

maerskbristol.jpg (124256 bytes)

We then enjoyed some brighter spells - the next two vessels catching the sun on their way to us, only
for it to fail when in camera reach. "Maersk Bristol" passes very close in at Terneuzen...

maerskbristol2.jpg (116720 bytes)

maerskbristol3.jpg (141871 bytes)

britishcormorant.jpg (138679 bytes)

.. to allow room for the outward BP tanker "British Cormorant".

britishcormorant2.jpg (127311 bytes)

unionruby.jpg (141812 bytes)

Returning to the base at Terneuzen the "Union Ruby"...

unionruby2.jpg (161160 bytes)

multratug9.jpg (125418 bytes)

... followed by the "Multratug 9". With very little else in sight we decided to call it a day just after 18:00.

multratug9b.jpg (131207 bytes)

cieloditokyo.jpg (140385 bytes)

However, as we headed to the locks we could see movement, so headed just into the canal area
to get shots of the outward bound "Cielo di Tokyo".

cieloditokyo2.jpg (148470 bytes)

multratug11.jpg (154823 bytes)

Bow tug on the bulker was the "Multratug 11"...

hemiksem2.jpg (151949 bytes)

..and stern tug the "Hemiksem".

Next day was to be our last day - the plan was to venture up the canal to the steelworks on our way
out to Zeebrugge for the ferry in the afternoon... how would the weather be?
